Before you dispose of a household item why not call a local charity or social enterprise to see if they can make use of it? 
In some cases they will be able to come and pick it up from you.

These items need to be in good condition, although some groups will carry out some restoration work. 
Some will also take electrical goods – ask and they will tell you what they can accept.
